H. Finkelmann's Group in Freiburg
Born in 1945 in Gronau, he first became an engineer.
Starting in 1969, he then studied chemistry at the Technical University of Berlin (Diplom in 1972) and at the University of Paderborn, where he earned his PhD under the supervision of H. Stegemeyer.
He spent three postdoctoral years with H. Ringsdorf at the University of Mainz, and moved to the Technical University of Clausthal in 1978.
After the Habilitation in 1984 in Clausthal (group of G. Rehage) he was offered his current position, Professor of Polymer Chemistry at the University of Freiburg.
In 2006, when Prof. Finkelmann was awarded the GW Gray Medal, the British Liquid Crystal Society published an article [pdf] about his life and his scientific work. To mark Prof. Finkelmann's 65th birthday, Macromolecular Chemistry and Physics also published an article by three former PhD students about him.
Professor Finkelmann has been retired since 2010.
